Graphiting whippens

When the graphite is worn away, the wood can be seen through the graphite. See picture below.

This gives a rough and sluggish playing action. New graphite is painted on. See the two whippens on the left of the picture:

The graphite needs polishing up, then it gives a nice slippery surface which slides over the roller.
